Description

We at Simon de Senlis feel that we need to make learning so irresistible for children that they can’t resist it and that for children to take their place in the world successfully they need the following skills, knowledge and attributes:

To value and respect the wellbeing and needs of themselves and others.
To be able to communicate with others with confidence and accuracy.
To have a passion for learning and achievement that develops and extends beyond the classroom.
To have the skills, knowledge and confidence to respond effectively to problems and challenges.
To be able to interpret and make sense of the world.

Company description
In September 2009, we introduced a new curriculum for our learners. The purpose of any school curriculum is to set out the learning that children need to learn in order to be ready for the next and future phases of their lives. The previous curriculum was largely based on non statutory guidance documents produced in the late 1990s. As we all know, our world is changing ever rapidly and it was felt that our curriculum needed to be more inspiring and better able to equip our pupils for the future.

The ‘Simon de Senlis Primary School Curriculum 2009’ was developed during the 2008/9 academic year by governors and staff at all levels. The process was initiated before, but has been influenced by the 2008 Rose Report. We have consulted with an educational expert in the field of school improvement and curriculum design and combined original ideas with published materials.

What we have attempted to achieve with this curriculum is to combine the improvement of high standards with exciting experiences and a curriculum which has many elements unique to our school. We have re-considered our trips, topic structure and looked to put these together in a format that makes connections between different aspects of the curriculum in a way that is exciting and relevant but not forced. It does, needless to say, still meet the current National Curriculum requirements.

This draft of the curriculum will not be the final map of what children will learn at Simon de Senlis (nor should it be!). What we have though, is a starting point which combines innovation, unique ideas and content, established practice and familiar reference points. We hope that it will be successful in delivering an exciting, vibrant, high quality learning experience for all of our children.
