Description

Tools For Self Reliance - Northampton.

Company description
Where did the idea for Tools come from? In 1993, I was the Manager at the Northampton Volunteer Bureau, now called Northampton Volunteering Centre. It was only a small place then, myself and 3 others members of staff. We wanted to help people with extra support needs to find volunteering opportunities, which would provide them with interesting and absorbing activities. There were not a lot of opportunities for people with disabilities at that time so after much discussion it was decided to investigate the possibility of setting up a TFSR in Northampton to try and help fill this gap. Why Tools For Self Reliance (TFSR)? It was a national organisation with a network of local operations and it was agreed that if the centre could attract funding and find the right people to help run a TFSR unit in Northampton, it would be an ideal way of offering new and different opportunities for volunteers who wanted or needed to be in a supportive environment.
Even better it would be a way of helping two groups of people - the volunteers AND people in developing countries. Was it difficult to get things set up? It took time, but everyone involved was determined! There was a lot of preparatory work including several visits to the TFSR in Milton Keynes. Being granted start-up funds by the then Director of Social Services at NCC, was a big day! We were provided with enough money to pay the rent on a unit in Wheatfield Road in Abington and the salaries for two support workers who organised the work of the project and supported the volunteers. How did it feel when you had Tools ready to offer as a volunteer post? From the word go TFSR was a hit with volunteers.
Most were male and almost all of them had disabilities of one kind or another and they just loved the idea that they were working with machinery and creating a valuable end product - a real job. Tools was unique in Northampton and maybe still is. We now have, on average, 60 disadvantaged volunteers that attend one or more of our wo
